But a too small tool will be difficult to use as an effective pry tool for heavy-duty use, so you will want to find a happy medium that’s easy to EDC. The length of the tool determines its pocketability. You want an EDC pry bar that’s not so big for EDC that you can’t justify carrying it around unless you pry things open regularly. Common features include a bottle opener, screwdriver, a bit driver, a hex wrench, and occasionally a knife blade.\ Length and Weight All others are secondary, but as many functions as can be placed in a compact tool without making it too big for EDC are welcome. How to Choose the Best EDC Pry Bar FunctionsĪn EDC pry bar has to have the appropriate tool at one of its ends to fulfill its essential function. Key Features: Super compact, lanyard hole Key Features: Bottle opener and lanyard hole Key Features: Available in 2 materials and finishes The Most Functional Pry Bar: Gerber Lockdown The Most Premium Pry Bar: Vero Engineering Fulcrum The Best Pry Bar on a Budget: Gerber Chonk The Best Overall Pry Bar: AmslerKnives HR Micro This guide will highlight some of our favorite EDC pry bars that you can pick up today. Thankfully, more than a few compact, dedicated pry tools are available for your everyday carry. Not only can that ruin your knife, but it could also injure you. Many people resort to using their EDC knives to wedge things open in a pinch without a pry bar. But traditional pry bars are usually too big to carry daily, and even if you could tolerate the weight, lugging one around could give people the wrong impression about your intentions. You may not even need a multi-tool - an EDC pry bar might do the trick instead, and we’ll walk you through the best ones in our guide. When you need to pry things apart or gain access to closed spaces, there's really only one tool for the job: a pry bar.In our guide to minimal everyday carry, you’ll learn all about the world of downsizing your EDC gear to just the essentials. Our guide to bags for men will help you discover what size and style of EDC bag is right for you. Interested in learning even more about the everyday carry gear that will make your life better, smoother, and more interesting? We have a few guides you may want to check out: Not to be confused with a construction worker’s multi-tool, an EDC multi-tool features a streamlined selection of common tools (knife, screwdriver, pry bar, etc.) stowed away neatly in a fold-out metal case. So consider: How do you want to carry it? How many tools do you really need to use on a daily basis? And how much are you willing to spend? That will guide you to the best EDC multi-tool for you. The best EDC multi-tool is the one that’s right for your needs. If you’re looking for one multi-tool to take with you everywhere, capable of handling all but the most specialized jobs, Leatherman’s Wave+ is the way to go.Īnd to wrap things up, we’ll answer some of the most common questions the internet has to offer. It’s a bit of a beast to hold in your pocket, but not so large as to feel uncomfortable when stowed away in your EDC bag. Thirteen lockable tools are contained within the Wave+’s four inch, half pound frame, with many accessible from the outside with one hand. At over $100, it’s certainly not cheap - but its time-tested design puts it in a uniquely versatile position that we just can’t get enough of. Leatherman’s Wave+ Multi-Tool is definitely in the BIFL category, and it’s one that we’ve had success with for years. The Leatherman brand name is practically synonymous with multi-tools at this point, and with good reason: They have perhaps the widest range of multi-tool styles, and make everything from simple keychain tools to buy-it-for-life favorites. That’s exactly what follows in the five tools below. Rather than take one side or another, we’d like to take a different approach: Offering a whole range of styles and prices for everyday carry multi-tools, from the large and comprehensive to the small and specialized. And in our everyday carry communities, there’s heated debate about what the best EDC multi-tools really are. Unless you feel like making a construction worker’s tool belt a part of your everyday style - more power to you if so - then you’ll probably want to start carrying a multi-tool.Įxactly what kind of multi-tool, though, is another matter entirely.

If it looks like a proper access system it probably is. Therein it seems that OSHA was liberally construing that end frame ladder systems are designed and constructed for use as a ladder provided they meet the standard. In a historical letter of interpretation related to the use of integral ladder scaffolds designed and manufactured from 1957 - 1987, Fed OSHA stated that the standard “should be liberally interpreted to permit the use of those ladder systems (both portable ladders and ladders built into the scaffold frame)”. rung length, spacing, uniform spacing etc.) they were considered designed and constructed for use as ladder rungs. Provided the frames met all the other requirements for access (e.g. As such, the majority of frames met the new standards and requirements for safe access. When OSHA revised subpart L they consulted industry experts and arrived at a spacing of 16 ¾ inches for end frame ladder sections which included most designs currently in place. Walk through frames were designed to facilitate the use of a wheelbarrow for transporting mortar and block/brick. Blocks were generally 8” in height and stacked 2 blocks high with mortar worked out to an ideal spacing of 16 ¾ inches for the vertical bars but spacing varied generally between 16” and 20” and wasn’t always uniform. The original mason frames were not designed with the intent of being used as an access point and the spacing of the horizontal bars on the end frames was mostly for ease of masonry installation and placing scaffold planks. Most imitators have design specs that match one of these three. These three types dominate the industry and are similar in specs but do vary and should not be interchanged. These include Safway Scaffolding type frames (Blue), Waco (Red), and BilJax (Yellow). There are now basically 3 different frame design standards in the United States that dominate the market. The original design for most end frames in common use today was done well before OSHA even existed, in the 1940’s, and those designs largely have not changed. In lieu of getting some sort of letter or response from the manufacturer which is often difficult we can examine the history of these scaffolds. Do you know if your scaffold frame was designed specifically for use as a ladder or not? What if the manufacturer calls your scaffold end frame a mason frame? Does it need to be called a ladder frame? Does it even matter what the manufacturer calls it? These are some tricky questions which might be answered by reaching out to the manufacturer and their engineering department. The first item requires that these end frames be “specifically designed and constructed for use as ladder rungs”. Non-uniform rung spacing caused by joining end frames together is allowed, provided the resulting spacing does not exceed 16 3/4 inches. Have a maximum spacing between rungs of 16 3/4 inches and These include:īe specifically designed and constructed for use as ladder rungs īe uniformly spaced within each frame section īe provided with rest platforms at 35-foot maximum vertical intervals on all supported scaffolds more than 35 feet high If we look at the specific requirements for integral prefabricated scaffold access frames 1926.451(e)(6) we find that there are some additional requirements for safe access. Crossbraces shall not be used as a means of access.Īs we can see “integral prefabricated scaffold access” is listed as an acceptable and safe means, which means the built-in metal scaffold end frame ladders. When scaffold platforms are more than 2 feet (0.6 m) above or below a point of access, portable ladders, hook-on ladders, attachable ladders, stair towers (scaffold stairways/towers), stairway-type ladders (such as ladder stands), ramps, walkways, integral prefabricated scaffold access, or direct access from another scaffold, structure, personnel hoist, or similar surface shall be used. The first place we can look are the Federal Safety and Health Regulations for Construction - Subpart L Scaffolds 1926.451(e). There are a few places where we can find those answers. Usually these discussions are initiated after finding deficiencies and workers climbing around the scaffold like spider monkeys.Īre the end frames a safe and legal means of access? If not, when are they not? The answers to these questions depend on several factors and it has been my experience that many workers and even some safety professionals often don’t have the answers. Over the years I have had numerous conversations with various trade workers as it relates to suitable and safe access to their work platforms when working on fabricated frame metal scaffolds. The trigrams describe the rhythms and cycles of nature, like the four seasons or the cardinal and inter-cardinal directions among other things. As Feng Shui is one of eight branches of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) the other modalities of meditation, exercise, diet, cosmology, bodywork, herbal medicine and acupuncture also deploy the use of the five elements in each discipline. These are more commonly referred to as the Five elements. Water is one of five energy forces, applied throughout Feng Shui - Wood, Fire, Earth and Metal complete the set. Consequently, the element of Water to a Feng Shui consultant is used in a very measured fashion. In essence, the 'quality' of water is significant and when it's partnered with Wind the results are highly effective. Regrettably generic advise by less scholarly folk, albeit well intended, to place Water in non specific areas of a building can bode negatively for some. A nod to the significance of waters powerful use and effects, when applied correctly by a Feng Shui consultant. Water is one of the five elements that lends its name to the definition of Feng Shui ‘ Feng’ meaning Wind and ‘ Shui’ meaning Water. Through the lens of Feng Shui forefathers, Water represents your fortune in Taoist Feng Shui. Game development 1903–1934 First page of patent submission for first version of Lizzie Magie's board game, granted on January 5, 1904 And Hasbro has also been including the Speed Die, introduced in 2006's Monopoly: The Mega Edition by Winning Moves Games, in versions produced directly by Hasbro (such as the 2009 Championship Edition). Monopoly" character a 3-D computer-generated look, which has since been adopted by licensees USAopoly (The OP), Winning Moves and Winning Solutions. Hasbro also modified the official logo to give the "Mr. In 2008, Hasbro permanently changed the color scheme and some of the gameplay of the standard US Edition of the game to match the UK Edition, although the US standard edition maintains the Atlantic City property names. Since 1994, many official variants of the game, based on locations other than Atlantic City, New Jersey (the official setting for the North American version) or London, have been published by Hasbro or its licensees. In 1989, the first of many video game and computer game editions was published. Starting in 1985, a new generation of spin-off board games and card games appeared on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean. International tournaments, first held in the early 1970s, continue to the present, although the last national tournaments and world championship were held in 2009. Despite the "rediscovery" of the board game's early history in the 1970s and 1980s, and several books and journal articles on the subject, Hasbro (which became Parker Brothers' parent company) did not acknowledge any of the game's history before Charles Darrow on its official Monopoly website as recently as June 2012, nor did they acknowledge anyone other than Darrow in materials published or sponsored by them, at least as recently as 2009. At the conclusion of the court case, the game's logo and graphic design elements became part of a larger Monopoly brand, licensed by Parker Brothers' parent companies onto a variety of items through the present day. The game's name remains a registered trademark of Parker Brothers, as do its specific design elements other elements of the game are still protected under copyright law. Because of the lengthy court process, including appeals, the legal status of Parker Brothers' copyright and trademarks on the game was not settled until 1985. Through the research of Anspach and others, much of the early history of the game was "rediscovered" and entered into official United States court records. Īlso in the 1970s, Professor Ralph Anspach, who had himself published a board game intended to illustrate the principles of both monopolies and trust busting, fought Parker Brothers and its then parent company, General Mills, over the copyright and trademarks of the Monopoly board game. Even a guide to family games published for Reader's Digest in 2003 gave credit only to Darrow and none to Elizabeth Magie, erroneously stating that Magie's original game was created in the 19th century and not acknowledging any of the game's development between Magie's creation of the game and the eventual publication by Parker Brothers. Several people, mostly in the midwestern United States and near the East Coast of the United States, contributed to design and evolution.īy the 1970s, the idea that the game had been created solely by Charles Darrow had become popular folklore it was printed in the game's instructions for many years, in a 1974 book devoted to Monopoly, and was cited in a general book about toys as recently as 2007. By 1933, a board game had been created much like the modern version of Monopoly sold by Parker Brothers and its related companies through the rest of the 20th century, and into the 21st. A series of board games was developed from 1906 through the 1930s that involved the buying and selling of land and the development of that land. Magie, a follower of Henry George, originally intended The Landlord's Game to illustrate the economic consequences of Ricardo's Law of economic rent and the Georgist concepts of economic privilege and land value taxation. The earliest known version, known as The Landlord's Game, was designed by Elizabeth Magie and first patented in 1904, but existed as early as 1902. The board game Monopoly has its origin in the early 20th century. The five sets of the board game Monopoly depicted here show the evolution of the game's artwork and designs in the United States from 1935 to 2005. For the economic term, see Monopoly § Historical monopolies. This hike is a bit out of the way from things, but that's another thing that makes this a great destination to get away from it all.
